Learning disabilities and counseling
Mental illness and the following learning disabilities are not the same I’m only putting these two terms side-by-side because they both make everyday life difficult. If you are offended that I used terms next to one another this was not my intention.
There are many learning disabilities as well as mental illnesses that can make everyday life difficult. I’m mostly going to focus on dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder because they’re the most common and I personally have an awareness of these because I’ve been diagnosed with these myself. This blog is going to be focusing on how mental health counseling can help the individual who has been struggling with any type of learning disability or mental health issue.
People that have been diagnosed with a learning disability or a mental health issue may feel angry, betrayed, ashamed, or even isolated by society. They may feel that this label has crippled them and force them to a life of poverty and that they will never get out from under this weight.
People that have been diagnosed with learning differences or mental health issues may have already been told by a teacher, role models and the people they look up to That you will only get so far in life, that they should probably just not try, be happy with what they already have.
When people say stuff like that there are only looking at a single grain of sand they’re not taking in the Mountain that you have already climbed. Resiliency is your strongest strength. Keep on going.
Counseling will help you find your strength. Counseling will help you highlight strengths and help you build upon and create more strategies to overcome challenges.
There are roughly 42 billion individuals in the United States that are struggling with dyslexia.
Dyslexia can make it difficult for an individual to read basic writing, spelling as well as other technical skills like math. The National Center for education said that individual struggling with learning differences are twice as likely to drop out of school.
Attention deficit hyperactivity is another issue that affects more than 6 million Americans. People that struggle with ADHD will often find traditional education very difficult.
ADHD makes it very hard for a person to focus on specific tasks. Elon Musk, once said that ideas come to him like fireworks going off in his head. That is what it’s like having an ADHD you often have ideas and thoughts coming to you so fast that it is hard to sort through them.
I know from my own experiences I sometimes find myself working on one project and then I will start another project and before I know it I have three projects going at the same time. This can be very exhausting and the worst part is there is a high chance I will not get all the projects done. So you may get frustrated with yourself possibly even angry you may feel that you have also let other people down.
ADHD affects people in many different ways. But the bottom line is any learning disability can cause the person to feel ashamed, angry, embarrassed and lots of other crippling emotions. It can affect your social and work life and hold you back.
Mental illness and learning disabilities do not dictate your intelligence. Just like we are all different, we also learn in different ways.
I often say that if you have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder seeing a therapist is no different than if you had a broken arm and you went to see a doctor.
Your ability to get up every morning and continue to fight and keep going shows your strength. There is no reason for you to do this along. Support groups, professionals, therapists, these people can stand by you to assist and support you in accomplishing your goals.
